How it works
01
Open the Library

Anyone can read, on a phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to sign up for.

02
Browse the shelves

Fiction, Nonfiction and Poetry, each with shelves by theme, such as family heritage, elders and generations, and Native and Indigenous stories.

03
Read and pass it on

Each book opens chapter by chapter, and every book has its own page to share with family and friends.

What is in it

The Library is public and free. New books are added regularly.

For readers
Free to read
No account, no ads and no fee.
Shelves by theme
A book can sit on more than one shelf, so it is found where a reader looks for it.
Series in order
Books in a series sit together, left to right, starting with the first book.
Front and back covers
Turn a book over on the shelf to read its back cover before opening it.
Search
Find a book by title, author, subject or theme.
For authors
Written in short pieces
A book is built one short segment at a time, so it can be written in bursts.
Read before it is shelved
Every book is read by the ECO team before it reaches a shelf.
Credited to the author
Authors see how many times a book has been read, never who read it, and may withdraw a book at any time.
Community protocols respected
Knowledge a community keeps restricted stays restricted, and sacred or ceremonial knowledge is never shared without the community's permission.
Find a book by culture or theme
Filter the shelves by the culture a story comes from (Indian, Hmong, Mexican, Ghanaian and many more) or by what it is about: elders' memories, service, saving a language, keeping a craft, heritage houses. Every filter has its own link to share.
Former royal houses and the people of their states, elders and grandchildren, North and South, at home and abroad.
Listen as well as read
Books with a full recording show a Listen button, with a player that keeps your place and works from the phone lock screen.
Free here, also in print
Most books are free to read in full. A growing number are also published as ebooks and paperbacks; those open with three free chapters for visitors and stay free in full for members.
How to ask, what we ask of every author, and what keeps a book off the shelf.
